Why is it hot at the equator?
It is hot at the equator because sunlight hits that part of the Earth almost straight on, year-round, packing more energy into every square metre. Near the poles, sunlight arrives at a low, slanting angle, spreading the same energy over a bigger area, so it warms the ground less.
Angle Changes Everything
Picture shining a torch straight down onto a table: you get a small, bright, concentrated circle of light. Now tilt the torch so the beam hits the table at a shallow angle, and the same amount of light spreads out into a long, dim oval covering a bigger area. Sunlight behaves exactly the same way on the curved surface of the Earth. At the equator, the Sun sits almost directly overhead for most of the year, so its rays strike the ground steeply and concentrate their heat into a small area. Further from the equator, the same sunlight arrives at a slant, spreading the same energy thinly across more ground, which is why it feels cooler.
Less Atmosphere to Cross
There is a second reason the equator runs hot: the path sunlight travels through the air. Sunlight hitting the equator nearly straight on passes through the atmosphere by close to the shortest possible route, so relatively little of its energy is scattered or absorbed along the way before it reaches the ground. Sunlight arriving at a slanting angle near the poles has to cut through a much thicker slice of atmosphere, travelling sideways through more air, dust and cloud, which scatters and absorbs more of its energy before it ever reaches the surface. Both effects, the angle and the longer path, work together to make equatorial regions warmer.
A Steady Climate All Year
Places far from the equator lean toward or away from the Sun as the Earth travels around it, which is what gives them warm summers and cold winters. The equator barely tilts toward or away from the Sun at all during the year, because it sits on the planet's middle line, so the strong, direct sunlight it receives barely changes from month to month. That is why equatorial regions like the Amazon rainforest or parts of Indonesia stay hot and often humid all year, without the big temperature swings that countries further north or south experience between summer and winter.

Is the equator always hot?
